Z Technology introduces compact, Windows based, RF signal strength mapping system

Today, Z Technology introduces a new, automated S5007GPS RF field strength mapping system. Using this Windows based system, a Television Broadcaster / Wireless Communications provider can easily generate signal strength maps of the service area and take immediate steps to correct or improve geographic coverage.

The S5007GPS system takes advantage of the precision and flexibility of Z Technology’s new R-507 Field Strength Meter which provides accurate, high-speed measurement under PC control. When used with a calibrated antenna, the S5007GPS provides a comprehensive facility for NIST traceable RF power measurement and documentation of digital or analog signal coverage.

This unique turn-key system includes the factory installed Drive Test Version 2.0 automated measurement program, a single windows based program which uniquely integrates three separate yet related applications; Data Collection, Dot Plotting, and Swept Spectrum Analysis.

Data Collection automates the process of logging precise field strength measurement and associated GPS location of up to fifty (50) frequencies with the single click of a button. The application is started before the vehicle is placed in motion, and the system accumulates signal strength data without further attention.

Live plotting of the GPS locations can be viewed in process. Upon completion of the drive test, a post measurement mode allows the user to assign colors to the dot trail of the driven path where colors correspond to signal strength. Z Technology has also developed translator software to overlay color-coded signal strength plots on commercially available digital street maps.

Swept Spectrum Analysis shows a live spectrum of the signals under test. The user may at any time pause the data collection, quickly look at the desired signal or spectrum, and then resume data collection all within the drive test program. The Swept Spectrum display is useful in analysis of bandpass tilt, signal notches, and total power of digitally modulated signals such as DTV, DVB-T, and GSM. Under control of the system PC, the S5007GPS will measure and display total power in a user-defined bandwidth, peak power in the band, and signal strength versus frequency over spans of 5, 10, or 20 MHz.

For analog signals, the Spectrum Display allows a user to examine occupied bandwidth and relative power levels of adjacent signals. The Spectrum Display is also useful when analyzing modulation characteristics of AM, VSB, FM, TDMA, CW, or close-in spread spectrum signals.

An operator can easily switch between the two applications, or can use the R-507 with its front panel LCD display in a stand-alone mode for precision field strength measurements across a frequency range of 5 to 1000 MHz.
