Beaverton, Oregon. Z Technology, Inc. announced the introduction of the model R-507 Field Strength Meter with Digital Television measurement capability. This is the latest in a series of test equipment offered by the company.
The R-507 is a portable, easy to use digital television signal measurement and display instrument. A versatile and accurate measurement system for 8-VSB and COFDM modulated signals is created utilizing the R-507, a laptop PC and Z Technologys proprietary application software. A serial data port connects the laptop PC to the field strength meter. The R-507 system offers several straightforward methods for analyzing digital signals. It provides a 5 MHz, 10 MHz and 20 MHz spectrum display of the received VHF or UHF channel. Signal strength is graphically presented with a dynamic range of 60 dB. Digital television signal analysis is achieved by viewing a spectrum display on the PC screen. Users can quickly and intuitively determine quality of signal reception for 8-VSB and COFDM signals.
In addition to the spectrum display, the R-507 system can provide three quantitative values (or figures of merit) to further characterize the received signal. These values are calculated from the measured data. The figures of merit include: Received Power across the received bandwidth (usually 6MHz or 8 MHz), In-Band Ripple to characterize depth of notches in the signal caused by reflections, and Across-the-Band Tilt. The three discrete values can be actively displayed on screen and stored in a data file for future analysis. The user is also able to store the actual spectrum display as it is viewed on the PC screen. At a later time, signal measurements taken by the R-507 can be displayed as they actually appeared during capture in the field.
Along with its digital television analysis capabilities, the R-507 spectrum display feature is useful for displaying and analyzing any received signal, analog or digital. This makes the unit a very useful tool when working with a band of analog signals or with other forms of digital modulated carriers.
The R-507 is also a stand-alone precision measurement instrument for RF testing of analog television and FM broadcast signals. It is a portable, battery operated, fully synthesized field strength meter. The unit covers 5 MHz to 1000 MHz and allows tuning in 1 kHz frequency steps. The R-507 has a 100 dB dynamic range and an input impedance of 50 ohm. Power measurement accuracy is guaranteed to within ±2 dB and is traceable to NIST.
From the R-507 front panel, an operator can directly read signal levels in dBuV, dBm and dBuV/meter. The later readout mode is used with calibrated antennas (those with Antenna Factor values provided) to precisely measure off-air signal power in volts/meter referenced to the dB scale.
The product includes an internal NiCaD battery pack, protective softcase, collapsible antenna and AC battery charger/power supply. The unit weighs 10 lb. and measure 3.5"H x 8.4" W x 9.0" D.
The instrument availability is approximately 40 days.
